Sexual predator sentenced after being caught by paedophile hunters

A pervert who was caught by a paedophile hunting team has been handed two years imprisonment

Colin Thomas Barnes of Bristol appeared at Cardiff Crown Court where he appeared for sentencing for sexual offences which included:

  • Arranging to meet a child aged under 13

  • Six counts of inciting a child under 13 into sexual activity

  • Sexual communication of a child aged under 13

The court was told that Barnes had contacted the online profile that he believed belonged to a 12 year old girl.

Barnes sent sexually explicit messages with the clear intent of engaging the child into sexual activity.

Barnes arranged to meet the child on 25th February 2019 at the Ship Inn car park in Llantwit Fardre. However, he was met by members of a paedophile hunting team called ‘KKS Wales’

The team questioned Barnes on his internet activity. They rang the police who arrived and arrested Barnes on suspicion of sexual offences.

Barnes was sentenced to two years on each charge of inciting a child under 13 into sexual activity and a further six months for sexual communication with a child aged under 13. But all the sentences would run concurrently meaning a total sentence of two years was imposed

The judge handed Barnes a 10 year sexual harm prevention order and told him to register as a sex offender for ten years
