Pervert jailed for having indecent images of “very young” children

A Mossend man caught with indecent images of children has been jailed for a year after a sheriff rejected a community sentence as “unsuitable”.

Thomas Lennon’s lawyer and social workers urged a period of supervision as an alternative to prison for the first offender.

But Sheriff Daniel Kelly wasn’t persuaded and ordered Lennon, of Cadzow Drive, to be locked up.

The sheriff said there were “aggravating” factors in the case including the “very young” age of children in the photographs.

Lennon (55) was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted possessing indecent images on a computer at his home between June 2014 and September 2017 and distributing or sharing an image on one day in September 2017.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Kelly told Lennon he had been in possession of indecent images for a considerable period and some of the children featured were “very young”.

The sheriff said: “These are aggravating factors and, while you have no previous convictions and have previously been of good character, these are very serious charges.

“Taking everything into account, I come to the conclusion that there is no suitable alternative to a custodial sentence.”

Lennon was told the jail term had been reduced from 18 months to a year because of his guilty plea.

He will be on the sex offenders’ register for ten years and a recommendation that he is not suitable to work with children will be made to the Scottish Government.
