Derriford Hospital nurse caught sending explicit photos to ’13-year-old girl’

A suspended Derriford Hospital nurse was caught sending “highly explicit” photographs to a girl he believed to be 13 years of age, a court heard.

Dad-of-two, Nuno Rodrigues, engaged in online conversations of a sexual nature via KIK messenger and Skype with a profile named ‘Maisie’, which had a display picture of a young girl.

‘Maisie’ had told Rodrigues that she was 13, but it was actually an undercover Devon and Cornwall Police officer, Plymouth Crown Court heard today.

Judge Paul Darlow said he had to sentence Rodrigues “for attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child”.

But he suspended his prison sentence, saying that Rodrigues “family consequences are far more devastating” than any punishment the court could give.

He was a registered nurse at Derriford Hospital’s A&E department, and had worked in the profession for ten years in the UK, and three years in Portugal, where he first qualified.

Rodrigues, of Octans Way, Sherford, pleaded guilty to intentionally sexually communicating with a person under 16, who he did not reasonably know to be 16 or over, namely online sexualised chat.

Rodrigues was handed a ten-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, as well as being subject to a two-year Sexual Harm prevention order.

He will also serve a 36-month community order.
