‘Reclusive’ pensioner groomed girl by buying her sweets then repeatedly sexually abused her

A “reclusive” pensioner groomed a teenage girl by buying her sweets and then repeatedly sexually abused her, a court heard.

David Taylor, 66, was jailed at Newport Crown Court after he admitted 11 counts of sexual activity with a child

Judge Neil Bidder QC said: “There is no doubting the very great impact this has had on a young girl.”

The court heard the victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was at secondary school at the time.

Alison O’Shea, prosecuting, said: “There was an element of grooming.”

She told the court Taylor would buy the girl sweets and other gifts like books.

The court heard he touched her breasts and his offending “escalated” until the child told her mother on April 17 last year about what was happening.

Her victim personal statement was not read out in court but the judge noted the sexual abuse had a “very substantial effect” on her and she is having counselling.

Taylor, from Victor Road in Abertillery, admitted 11 counts of sexual activity with a child under 16.

Judge Bidder noted the significant disparity in age between the defendant and the victim.

In his sentencing remarks he said: “There was a degree of grooming behaviour in this case.”

Taylor was jailed for six years and the judge imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. He will also have to register as a sex offender indefinitely. There was a £170 victim surcharge.
