Long distance lorry driver’s internet sex shame

A long distance lorry driver used indecent images of children to combat boredom when on lengthy journeys, York Magistrates Court heard.

Jonathan Bell, 59, admitted getting the illegal pictures and videos via the internet over a 13-year period.

His solicitor Kevin Blount said: “Whilst regularly staying away from home, he has accessed pornography and sadly the use of pornography has developed into the use of illegal pornography rather than just legal pornography.

“The medical difficulties he has led to him seeking more extreme images for seeking sexual gratification.”

He also drank too much, said the solicitor.

District judge Adrian Lower said Bell had made a “hobby” out of his illegal activities and that he had completely failed to appreciate that he was looking at images of real children being sexually abused.

He made him subject to a 30-month community order with a 26-session programme for sexual offenders and 150 hours’ unpaid work. He also put him on the sex offenders’ register for five years.

Bell, of Woodlea Avenue, Acomb, pleaded guilty to two charges of having indecent images and one of downloading indecent images.

The court heard he had six videos and 42 pictures of the most serious form of child sexual images, 31 pictures of the middle category and 51 of the least serious.

They had been downloaded after January 1, 2005 and before February 9, 2018.

On February 9, 2018, police found 76 indecent pictures of the least serious category on his computer.

Mr Blount said since his arrest, Bell had contacted a sexual offenders’ rehabilitation agency and was trying to change his ways.
