Paedophile who groomed child on Snapchat is jailed

A pervert who groomed a vulnerable child before filming and inciting her to send naked images via Snapchat has been jailed.

Depraved pervert Matthew Axtell carried out the multiple instances of abuse between 2011 and 2015 in Abingdon and in Wiltshire.

The 35-year old of Crowood Lane, Ramsbury, Wiltshire, had already admitted counts of voyeurism, producing and possessing indecent images of children and inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.

Oxford Crown Court heard at his sentencing hearing yesterday how Axtell had recorded his child victim, and later incited her to send indecent images.

Outlining the case prosecutors said that Axtell had sent numerous messages to a girl – who cannot be named for legal reasons – using the social media platform.

He also stored a number of indecent images and videos of children on his computer.

After the incidents of abuse had been reported to police he was arrested and a number of devices seized which revealed dozens of indecent images of children.

Search terms were also uncovered on the devices including ‘jail bait teens’ and ‘dirty teens on Instagram’.

The victim’s mother read out to the court an impassioned victim personal statement saying that she and her children had suffered mental health problems as a result of the abuse once it had come to light.

Sentencing Judge Ian Pringle QC said that Axtell had ‘groomed’ his young victim and that the offences were so serious only an immediate custodial sentence could be imposed.

He was jailed for a total of three years and six months and must sign the sex offenders register indefinitely.
