Victim’s anguish decades after paedophile lorry driver molested her in back of HGV cab
Sexual predator Peter Kelly has been jailed for 14 years – after grooming a young girl before molesting her in the back of his HGV cab.
The catalogue of indecent assaults were carried out several decades ago when his victim was under the age of 10.
She told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court that the horrific impact had left her with such deep emotional scars that she faced years of psychotherapy afterwards. “It is likely to be with me for the rest of my life,” she added.
Now 65-year-old Kelly – who was living in North Staffordshire at the time but has since moved to Crettyard, Laois, Ireland – has been brought back to face justice. He was apprehended using a European arrest warrant.
The defendant went on to admit eight charges of indecent assault and six offences of indecency with a child.
Prosecutor Timothy Ashmole said the incidents involved him touching her intimately, performing sex acts in front of her and forcing her into oral sex. The assaults were carried out at various locations in Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle.
Mr Ashmole told the court: “He drove a lorry that incorporated a bed in the back of a cab as his job included long distance driving.”
It was inside this vehicle that the girl was subjected to one of the indecent assaults. Vile Kelly even made her look at a porn magazine while he abused her.
The court heard it was a number of years before the victim plucked up the courage to make formal allegations to the police.
Facing him again in court, she read out a powerful victim impact statement, revealing how she had grown up with ‘intense feelings of anger’ as she tried to come to terms with the abuse.
“I was manipulated, controlled and exposed to things that a little girl should never have been exposed to,” she added.
The court heard Kelly had recently suffered a ‘massive’ heart attack and is on permanent medication after having heart surgery.
Jailing him, Judge Paul Glenn said: “This was a particularly vulnerable child and the psychological horror that she has suffered is severe. It was grooming behaviour.”
