Paedophile who bought child sex doll jailed for sick abuse videos

A Plymouth University graduate who imported a realistic child sex doll has been jailed after police found vile child abuse videos at his home.

Donald Styles was investigated by the National Crime Agency after the doll was intercepted at customs after being ordered on the internet from China.

Police who raided his home in Newton Abbot found 149 films or still images including one showing a six-month-old baby and another showing the rape of a girl aged about six.

There was also a CD ROM containing a film he made himself which showed a naked five-year-old girl and stills which he had taken from it.

Former Plymouth University art and ceramics student Styles told police he wanted the sex doll for an arts project which he wanted to submit to the University in an application for a masters degree course.

The doll was three foot high, had realistic sexual organs, and looked like a girl of about four to six. His story was rejected as ridiculous by a judge as he was jailed for 18 months at Exeter Crown Court.

All the images were found on CDs which he had made between 2002 and 2006 at the time during or just after he was a student at Plymouth.

Styles, aged 61, of Oak Place, Newton Abbot, admitted one count of taking and three of possessing indecent images of children.

He was jailed for 18 months by Judge David Evans, who also put him on the sex offenders’ register for ten years and made a Sexual Harm Prevention order which restricts his contact with children and allows the police to monitor his internet activity.

He told him: “The images in the case and the importation of the doll indicate you have a continuing sexual interest in young children. You don’t seem to appreciate properly the harm that can be caused.

“You say you needed the doll for some artistic purpose but if you needed a doll, there were plenty you could have bought legally. There was no reason whatsoever it had to be a child sex doll.

“Your explanation is utterly ridiculous and I reject it completely. This offence is so serious that only immediate imprisonment is justified.”

Mr Jason Beal, prosecuting, said an investigation was started in 2016 when Styles tried to import a three-foot high child sex doll from China.

His home was raided in February 2018 and the images were found on CD ROMs which had remained undeleted since being made in the early 2000s.

Mr Beal said: “He was asked about the doll and said he intended to use it in an art work he was assembling in preparation for an application for an MA course in conceptual art at Plymouth University.

“Asked about what police might find on his computer, he said ‘a few normal naughty nude pictures’.”

In reality 149 movies or images were recovered of which 72 fell in the worst category, effectively depicting child rape. There was also a video he had made of a naked child, aged about five.

Inquiries with Plymouth University showed he had not made any recent application for any courses.

He later admitted being sent the material by a man called Mike who he met in an internet chat room. He said his own interest was in ‘legal teens’ and denied a sexual interest in children.

He told police: “I wanted to find out what all the fuss was about.”
