78-year-old paedophile jailed for ‘campaign of rape’ during the 1970s

An old age pensioner who repeatedly raped a young girl in the 1970s called her a “lying little cow” and told her no one would believe her if she spoke about the abuse she suffered.

Paedophile Peter Smith, 78, of Hounslow, London carried out a “campaign of rape” on the child, who cannot be named for legal reasons, which began when she was just seven-years-old and lasted for a number of years.

The disgusting and degrading acts, which Smith subjected his victim to, came to light when she reported the matter to police in recent years.

He was found guilty of seven counts of raping a child under 13 following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court on February 21 this year.

The jury acquitted him of one count of raping an adult and were unable to reach a verdict in respect of two counts of raping a child under 13.

The court on Friday heard that Smith worked as a barber in Barry , having taken the business over from his father, and also worked as a lorry driver and a security assistant at the Butlins resort in Barry Island.

When the defendant raped his victim for the first time, he told her she would have to “replace his wife” as she was working long hours.

After the act, Smith said to his victim “You’re a lying little cow, no matter what face you show … they’re not going to believe you. You won’t tell anybody about this because they’ll only call you a liar”.

This became a regular occurrence, despite the victim pleading with him to stop and crying out in pain, which she described as “horrific”.

The horrendous abuse carried on for five years and only ended when the victim started having periods.

Smith later moved to London to start a new life and there had been no contact between him and the victim since the 1980s except from a handful of occasions.

In a victim personal statement read out to the court by prosecutor Matthew Roberts, the victim said life had not been easy for her.

She said: “I can sometimes hear his footsteps on the stairs and I can still smell the cigars and cigarettes he smoked. I can still smell the whiskey on his breath when he had been drinking. I still feel sick to my stomach.

“He carried on abusing me and if I told him not to, he said I would be called a liar and no one would believe me.

“To this day I can honestly say I have nightmares about him, especially when I am in distress or pain. I will never get over what he did to me

“He’s a liar, a cheat, a womaniser, a drinker and a gambler.”

Sentencing, Judge Christopher Vosper QC said: “It was plain from the evidence including extracts from medical records that (the victim) has suffered distress and has been psychologically affected throughout her life and suffered physical injury at the time.

“She described in her impact statement how anxiety has never left her and has dogged her life, causing her to refer to medical professionals about the abuse she suffered at your hand and attempts to make reports thereafter.

“The aggravating features in this case are the degradation with which you treated her and the length of time in which your conduct persisted.

“You affectively raped her throughout her childhood and she was particularly vulnerable because of her extreme youth. You used her as a sexual substitute for your wife.”

Smith was sentenced to a total of 16 years imprisonment, with an extended year on licence, and was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register.
