Paedophile paid young girls a £2.50 “reward” for sexually abusing them
A depraved paedophile paid young girls a £2.50 “reward” for sexually abusing them, a court heard.
Former mental health nurse Dewi Thomas is said to be in denial about his attraction to children – but does admit to being addicted to pornography.
Swansea Crown Court heard the months of abuse Thomas subjected his two young victims to has had a devastating effect on both them and their families.
Ian Wright, prosecuting, said 64-year-old Thomas would expose himself to the girls – both aged under 13 – and get them to perform a sex act on him in a prolonged period of abuse.
Mr Wright said one of the girls showed her mum the £2.50 “reward” Thomas had paid her for “playing” with his genitals.
In his subsequent police interview Thomas denied all the allegations against him. The court heard officers seized a tablet computer from his Carmarthenshire home and found he had searched for and viewed adult pornography on it.
Thomas, of Heol y Banc, Bancffosfelen, Pontyberem, later pleaded guilty to four counts of causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.
The court heard he had admitted the offences on the day of trial after his young victims had gone to court to testify against him.
The court heard that since the abuse one of the girls had begun suffering with tantrums and nightmares and has been left worrying that Thomas will take her away.
The mother of one of the girls said the experience had “devastated” them.
Judge Patrick Curran QC said a pre-sentence report into the defendant had concluded he posed a serious risk of harm to children unless he underwent appropriate sex offender courses.
He sentenced Thomas to a total of eight years in prison and made him the subject of a life-long sexual harm prevention order and life-long registration as a sex offender.
Thomas will serve half the sentence in custody before being released on licence to serve the remainder in the community.
