Bristol man who raped child from when she was five is jailed
A Bristol man who admitted multiple sexual assault and rape of a child has been given a 14-year sentence.
Paul Warfield, who has learning difficulties, abused the child from when she was aged five.
Bristol Crown Court heard it was only when she had sex education at school that she realised what was happening was wrong and reported it to teachers.
Warfield, 35, of Willow House in Bishport Avenue, pleaded guilty to six sexual assaults, two charges of inciting a female under 13 to engage in sexual activity and four charges of rape.
The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC told him: “This behaviour was persistent, over a very long time.
“I have no doubt whatsoever you knew what you were doing was wrong. You must be properly punished.”
Warfield will start his sentence in a secure hospital, where he will receive specialist care. If deemed fit for release from treatment he will conclude his sentence in prison.
He was handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning him from unsupervised contact with children aged under 16 for 15 years.
He was told to register as a sex offender indefinitely and was barred from working with children.
Ian Fenny, prosecuting, said the abuse comprised of improper touching as well as rape.
When Warfield was arrested it was indicated from an early stage it was unlikely there would be a trial.
