Rapist jailed for 10 years over attack on 11-year-old sister of his girlfriend

A sexual predator who raped his then girlfriend’s 11-year-old sister has been jailed for 10 years at the Central Criminal Court.

Anthony Woods (23), from Jamestown Road, Inchicore, Dublin, was found guilty in March – after a seven-day trial – of rape, oral rape and aggravated sexual assault against the girl, who is now aged 13.

The victim and her family wanted Woods named in the media.

Mr Justice Diarmuid O’Donovan told Woods “You robbed an 11-year-old girl of her virginity and her trust in men.” Mr Justice O’Donovan noted that whilst Woods had initially made admissions to gardai about the crime, he subsequently pleaded not guilty forcing the girl to undergo cross-examination in court.

He said she was very concerned about having to do this. “She feared that she wouldn’t be believed. She was stressed when she was giving evidence and I remember she shed a few tears.”

Mr Justice O’Donovan noted she also had problems being alone in a room with men.

He said he would be doing less than his duty if he were not to reflect the severity of the crime in the sentence.

Woods had been out at the pub on the evening of the offence and his then girlfriend decided to join him. She arranged for her sister to babysit.

Woods returned home without his girlfriend and carried out the attack.

He first assaulted her and then raped her.

He then forced her down on the bed and assaulted her again.

The victim later told her friend and her friend made her go into a Garda station to make her complaint.

Woods was jailed for ten years on each of the counts of rape and oral rape and for eight years for the aggravated sexual assault.

All sentences are to run concurrently and leave to appeal was refused.
