Rapist who targeted sleeping victims jailed

A serial rapist who targeted three teenagers as they slept has been jailed for seven years.

Matthew Ferguson attacked the teenagers over the course of five years at houses in Dundee and Galashiels.

The 24-year-old was found guilty of three rapes and an indecent assault committed between 2011 and 2016.

A trial was told that Ferguson sexually assaulted his youngest victim when she was 13 and raped her after she had turned 14.

Defence solicitor advocate Iain Paterson told the High Court in Edinburgh: “He intends to take every opportunity afforded to him in the prison system to reduce his risk of re-offending in the future.”

Judge Lady Carmichael told Ferguson that she took particular account of his age when the crimes were committed and said he was “still a child” at the time of the earliest offences.

Ferguson, of Dundee, was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.

Dundee man guilty of raping three sleeping victims

A man has been found guilty of raping three sleeping victims during a five-year period.

Matthew Ferguson carried out sex crimes against three teenagers at houses in Dundee and Galashiels.

Ferguson, 24, of Wellgrove Street, Dundee, had denied a series of charges during a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh but was found guilty of an indecent assault and three rapes committed between March 2011 and April 2016.

In all four offences, the victims were said to have been asleep and incapable of giving or withholding consent.

One victim told the court that she first fell victim to a sex crime committed by Ferguson when she was a young teen and staying overnight at a house in Galashiels as a guest at a party.

She later told police that Ferguson had come into the room where she was sleeping and molested her.

Describing when Ferguson raped her, she said: “It took me a minute or so to realise someone was lying on top of me.”

The victim said she was crying when she later told her dad what Ferguson had done to her.

A second woman told the court that in the spring of 2016 she was staying with her then- boyfriend in Dundee when Ferguson visited.

She said he and her boyfriend were discussing a phone app and she fell asleep after midnight.

She told advocate depute Richard Goddard that the next thing she remembered after falling asleep was “someone on top of me”.

She said she woke up to her boyfriend shouting: “Get off her.” She said Ferguson was still on top of her when she heard the words.

Ferguson, who had been on bail, was remanded in custody following the guilty verdicts and sentence was adjourned until next month.
