Man jailed for having sex with schoolgirl, 15
A man in his late 20s was jailed for four years after a jury found him guilty of having sex with a 15-year-old schoolgirl.
Kyron Jenkins, of Ty Newydd, Pontypool had denied six counts of sexual activity with a child.
But a jury at Cardiff Crown Court found the 28-year-old guilty of three of those charges.
During the course of the three-day trial, prosecutor Nicholas Gareth Jones had shown the court a video recording of the complainant’s police interview during which she told detectives: “He knew my age so it was his fault not mine.”
During cross-examination, the victim was asked by Marianne Lewis, who defended Jenkins, “You told him you were 16, didn’t you?”
She replied: “No. I told him I was 15.”
Miss Lewis also asked her: “You were mixing with older people, weren’t you?”
The complainant answered: “Yes, but I told him I was 15.”
The defence barrister put it to her that she wore a lot of make-up and dressed older than her age.
The complainant agreed with those statements but maintained that she told Jenkins she was under 16.
The court heard how the defendant and complainant had first met at a house in Newport where drugs were being taken.
Jenkins had admitted he had sex with the girl but he claimed that she had told him she was 19.
When asked by his Miss Lewis if he had asked the complainant her age, he replied: “She told me she was 19 back at my flat.”
He insisted: “I tell the truth.”
The defendant also said he took drugs like cocaine and amphetamine around the time of the allegations against him.
He said: “I took drugs to give me confidence.”
The jury also heard Jenkins’ police interview after he was initially arrested on suspicion of rape.
He told detectives about the time he first met her at the Newport house, saying: “She was looking at me like she wanted me.”
Jenkins was jailed for four years by Judge Richard Twomlow.
