Man had images of mutilation

A Whitnash man who had horrific clips of acts of mutilation on his phone has been told to consider how desperate people must be to allow themselves to be abused in such a way.

But Wade Timms escaped being jailed after the court heard he had the images ‘to make his mates cringe,’ rather than for any perverse sexual gratification.

The 24-year-old of Halls Close, pleaded guilty at Warwick Crown Court to possessing extreme pornography.

He was made subject to a two-year community order with a requirement to take part in a probation programme to address his offending, and was ordered to pay £535 costs and to register as a sex offender for five years.

Prosecutor Graham Russell said in August last year Timms was arrested in connection with other allegations, of which he has since been found not guilty.

But as part of that investigation, the police seized his phone, on which officers found five images classed as extreme pornography, showing acts likely to cause serious injury to those involved.

Mr Russell pointed out all of the extreme images were of adults, and there were no images of children on the phone.

Graeme Simpson, defending, said Timms had pleaded guilty to the charge ‘at a very early stage.’

But he could not be dealt with because he had the other more serious allegation hanging over him for over a year before being acquitted following a trial at Coventry Crown Court earlier this month.

Mr Simpson stressed the images, which had been sent to Timms through a WhatsApp group, rather than him searching for them, were not kept for any sexual gratification.

Deputy Judge Richard Griffith-Jones responded: “I accept that. But it seems that if they are, or may be, real people, people should see it for what it is. There is great suffering.

“Anyone who thinks this is funny or fascinating, or gets a perverse pleasure from this is providing a market whereby people could be cruelly tortured. There’s a perverse immaturity, wanting to be shocked.”

He told Timms: “I would expect someone of your age to think about what’s involved. Can you imagine it happening to you and, if it did, what sort of world you would be in to be insensitised sufficiently to do this, how perverse someone might be or how desperate you must be to allow someone to do that to you?”
