Paedophile ‘terrified of prison’ is jailed for three years for groping young girls

A paedophile who befriended three girls and groped them has been jailed.

Thomas Batten offered two of the youngsters cigarettes and alcohol before touching them briefly, Bristol Crown Court heard.

He enticed one of the children to touch him intimately.

The 33-year-old of Chadwick Close, Melksham, abused the girls in the Weston-super-Mare area.

A jury convicted him of sexually assaulting a girl aged 11 and another girl aged 12.

It also convicted him of three charges of having sexual activity with a third girl aged 13.

Judge Julian Lambert jailed him for three years.

He told Batten “You have a long-standing and deep-seated interest in the young.”

The judge handed Batten a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning him from contact with persons aged under 16 unless with parental permission.

Batten was also banned from contacting youngsters aged under 16 online, and barred from unchecked internet use.

He was told to register as a sex offender indefinitely.

The court heard Batten touched one girl’s bare chest and touched the second girl leg over clothes.

He groped a third girl’s leg and intimate area over clothes and she placed her hand on his private parts.

Charles Thomas, prosecuting, said one victim made an impact statement charting the effects of the abuse on her, including panic attacks and a lack of trust in adults.
