A man spotted performing a sex act near a Bristol church was arrested after he then went shopping.
A Tesco shop worker saw Scott Landry doing the act in an alley near St James Priory Church in the city centre.
When Landry was observed he scarpered, but later went to the Tesco store in nearby Marlborough Street and was captured on CCTV.
Landry, 31, of Jamaica Street Hostel, Jamaica Street, pleaded guilty to committing an act outraging public decency in July.
The Recorder of Bristol His Honour Judge Peter Blair QC handed him a two-year community order, comprising of up to 60 days on the Horizon sex offender programme.
The judge told him: “This effects people’s heads in a way you don’t seem to comprehend.
“If you decide you’re not going to play ball you’ll be back before me and you’ll get a prison sentence and it won’t be a short one.
Neil Treharne, prosecuting, told Bristol Crown Court Landry was seen doing a sex act at 5.45am, aiming his private parts at a 16-year-old girl.
When a shop worker approached him Landry seemed shocked, did up his trousers, denied doing anything wrong and ran off.
Landry later went to the Tesco store, where the same shop worker challenged him about his behaviour and he apologised.
CCTV from Tesco was retained and police arrested him.
The court heard Landry had six convictions for 15 offences, including four similar acts of outraging public decency and two exposures.
