He was told that he must register as a sexual offender for life
Mum calls Coatbridge beast “vile” as he’s jailed for molesting four-year-old
The devastated mother of a Coatbridge predator’s young victim has described the paedophile as a “vile creature” who has “destroyed my child”.
Sick Richard Barden was jailed for three years at Airdrie Sheriff Court last week for molesting the young girl, then aged just four, in 2011.
The 31-year-old placed his hand in the youngster’s lower clothing before carrying out the despicable attack at a property in the town.
The traumatised youngster had to go through the ordeal of giving evidence at Barden’s trial as he continued to protest his innocence – before finally being brought to justice seven years after his crime.
Angry and frustrated that Barden could be released from jail in just 18 months, the victim’s heartbroken mother told the Advertiser: “I don’t think there are any words that I can use to describe how I really feel about that man.
“Calling him a vile creature is probably the best way I can put it.
“Personally I think his sentence should have been longer for what he’s put my child through.
“Knowing he can be out in under 18 months is a slap in the face to our family because this has destroyed me as a mum and has destroyed my child too.”
Speaking on the effect Barden’s actions have had on her daughter, the woman went on: “She’s needed counselling and is so afraid of being anywhere on her own that she FaceTimes me when she walks to school.
“She has severe anxiety issues and can’t trust any man.
“It has affected her education and general wellbeing.
“She’s had to deal with this for the last seven years – yet he’ll likely spend just over one year in jail?
“That truly sickens me.”
During the past two years, the woman said her daughter was interviewed by authorities “umpteen” times and appeared in court on “five or six” occasions.
She said that heartless Barden even had the nerve to approach her and his victim in the court’s foyer after he had been bailed in February.
“He came up and shouted in my daughter’s face, ‘I’m winning this battle’, she said.
“She was terrified, she’s only 11 and there she was, with this man who abused her shouting at her.
“He laughed during evidence as well and looked like he thought it was all a joke.
“There’s nothing funny about why he was in court or what he did.
“I’m pleased and relieved that the jury found him guilty, but it’s horrifying that he could be back out so soon.”
Three months were added to Barden’s prison sentence for a further double offence on October 3 of last year.
He was caught with a “hatchet-type multi-tool” on a footpath near Coatbridge police office, where he also issued violent threats to place others in a state of fear and alarm.
Barden pled guilty to both charges and was sentenced to four months on the multi-tool charge and three relating to the second offence; to be served concurrently for a total of three months, given time already served.
He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register.
