Child images pervert back in Perth Sheriff Court

A Perth man, jailed for two years after he was caught with hundreds of sickening indecent images of children, failed to comply with the notification requirements of the Sexual Offences Act.

Perth Sheriff Court was told that police made an unannounced visit to 54-year-old William Buchan’s flat in North Methven Street on December 6 last year.

And they discovered a recently-issued bank card he had failed to tell them about.

The accused, whose name was added to the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years in 2016, insisted that the card hadn’t been obtained for “any nefarious purposes.”

But Sheriff Gillian Wade pointed out it could be used to access various internet sites – and that was how some sex offenders were traced.

Buchan was fined £500 after he admitted that on various occasions between August 1 and December 6, 2017, he failed to notify police that he had the new bank card within three days of obtaining it.

Depute fiscal Michael Sweeney said police were allowed into the accused’s flat and the bank card, dated August, 2017, was seen lying on a table.

When asked about it, he told officers: “I thought I told you about all my cards.”

Buchan, who previously worked for a van and truck bodybuilding company near Glasgow, was given 24 months behind bars in February, 2016.

The sheriff noted that in one of the charges, the number of images was “in the low hundreds” – and some were at level four and level five, the two most serious categories.
