Staffordshire karate expert who had sex with underage girl fails to get sentence cut
A 20-year-old karate expert from Staffordshire who was jailed earlier this year after having sex with an underage girl has failed to get his sentence cut by top judges.
Luke Millington, of Penkridge, received 28 months in a young offender institution at Stafford Crown Courton April 19.
Millington, a black belt in karate who previously represented England in the martial art, admitted three counts of sexual activity with a child, Mrs Justice O’Farrell told London’s Appeal Court today (September 7 2018).
He also pleaded guilty to causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
The judge said Millington first had sex with the girl when he was 17 and she was aged just 14 – and he also pressurised two other young girls into sending him photos of their naked breasts.
The Crown Court judge ‘erred’ in concluding there was significant planning involved in his crimes, said the QC.
They were ‘isolated, spontaneous acts’ and the sex had been ‘initiated’ by the girl on each occasion, he claimed.
But Mrs Justice O’Farrell said it was ‘quite clear that the girl thought that Millington loved her and, as a result, he convinced her to end up having sexual intercourse with him’.
This was ‘against the background of a significant number of messages from him seeking to pressure her into sexual activity’.
His crimes involved three underage girls and he ‘pressurised them relentlessly on social media and was willing to use threats to disclose the photos they had sent to him’.
“The judge’s overall sentence of 28 months’ detention cannot in these circumstance be regarded as manifestly excessive.
“Accordingly we refuse the application,” concluded the appeal judge, who was sitting with two others.
