Pervert spared prison after grooming ‘girl’
A man who sent a “14-year-old girl” explicit messages demanding to meet her for sexual activity has been spared jail.
Jason Roberts made plans to meet up with the teenager outside a Prestatyn supermarket only to discover he had been snared by a group of paedophile hunters
The 48-year-old, of Marion Road, Prestatyn, had contacted the girl called Jade online and during a period between October 16 and 27 last year sent a number of messages to her via a social media website asking for photographs and arranging a meeting.
But a judge at Caernarfon Crown Court heard the profile of Jade had been set up by Creep Catchers UK, a online group, and when Roberts turned up to meet the girl the police were alerted and he was arrested.
He admitted charges of attempt to meet a girl under 16 years of age following grooming and inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity.
Roberts also admitted a charge of being in possession of a folding pocket knife.
He was handed a 15 month prison sentence suspended for two years. Roberts must attend two courses organised by the Probation Service.
Sentencing Judge Timothy Petts said sending messages to who he believed to be a teenage girl but who was in fact an adult male was no excuse.
“You clearly have health problems but you knew what you were doing and that was wrong,” he said.
The judge ordered Roberts to be the subject of a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order and his details will be held on the Sex Offenders Register for the same period.
“I am giving you a chance to prove that this was isolated behaviour. If you re-offend there will be no second chance,” the judge added.
Richard Edwards, prosecuting, said the messages were numerous and contained crude and sexually inappropriate comments.
“He asked the girl to send him photographs of herself and when these were not forthcoming some of the messages became threatening in tone.
“Further messages sought to arrange a meeting with the girl for sexual activity.”
