The school cleaner who was caught out by ‘paedo hunter’ sting
A school cleaner who was suspended from his job after being caught talking to who he thought was a teenage girl online has been cautioned by police.
Derek Burt, who worked at Teign School in Kingsteignton, was targeted by an online group who broadcast their meeting with him on Facebook on Wednesday evening.
Burt, 46, was arrested by police on suspicion of attempting to arrange/facilitate the commission of a child sex offence and was given a caution.
During the Facebook Live broadcast, Burt was accused of sending sexually explicit photos and messages to what he thought was a 14-year-old girl.
He was actually messaging members of the group.
A Devon & Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “A 36-year-old man from Kingskerswell was arrested on suspicion of attempt to arrange/facilitate the commission of a child sex offence and has been given an adult caution.”
In a message to parents, Teign School said that Burt had never worked directly with children.
The letter read: “We were made aware last night, via Facebook, of an allegation directed toward a part-time cleaner at Teign School. We immediately contacted the police and the local authority and asked them to investigate these allegations rigorously and swiftly.
“The member of staff has been suspended, without prejudice, with immediate effect.
