Derby pervert indecently exposed himself to two ‘frightened’ young girls in street

A 58-year-old pervert from Derby has been jailed after indecently exposing himself to “two young terrified girls” in the street.

A court heard how John William Birks carried out the disgusting act in Tennyson Street, Allenton, at around 9pm on June 28

A passing motorist saw the girls running down the street in a “visibly upset” state and as he pulled alongside Birks, who was on the pavement, he saw him with his trousers and underwear around his ankles carrying out a sex act.

The man told officers Birks, of Radbourne Street, off Kingsway, pulled his trousers back up but then lowered them again and carried on with what he was doing.

Now he has been jailed for 20 weeks after admitting his offences.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: “The informant was driving down Tennyson Street, in Derby, at around 9pm on June 28.

“He told us that as he did so he saw two young girls running towards him who were visibly upset.

“He then saw the offender on the pavement with his back to him.

“He drove past him and could see that he had his trousers and underwear down and was carrying out a sex act.

“The man stopped his car and the offender pulled his trousers and underwear back up and he could see he was holding a magazine of some description.

“He then pulled his trousers and underwear back down and continued what he had been doing.”

The spokesman said the man in the car then called the police who arrived a short time later and arrested Birks at the scene.

He said: “He was arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure and although the two girls were not located they clearly would have been terrified at what they saw.

“In his police interview with our officers the offender said he did not know why he did what he did but told us he felt disgusted with himself.

“He said he did not know if any people were around and said he did not see any young girls in the area.

“He told us he remembers the man stopping and the officers arriving and arresting him.”

Birks pleaded guilty to indecent exposure when he appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court.

He also admitted one count of failing to surrender to custody when he didn’t turn up for his first sentencing hearing on July 23.

Magistrates jailed him for a total of 20 weeks for the two offences.

They also ordered him to sign the sex offender’s register which he will remain on for the next seven years.
