Babysitters jailed for total of 20 years for sexually abusing two young sisters in their care

Two babysitters who sexually abused the children they were looking after have been jailed for a total of 20 years.

Paedophile Steven Vye, 49, sexually molested two young girls over a five-month period in 2004, encouraged and helped by his wife, Pandora, 39.

He was locked up for 13 years yesterday, while she was sent to jail for seven years.

The couple abused the children, then aged six and eight, during a school summer holiday when Pandora Vye forced them to go individually into the bedroom of their flat, in St Giles Close, Desborough, where her husband would abuse them.

The court heard how Pandora Vye would later knock on the door before entering as she did not wish to see what her husband was doing to the children.

The assaults came to light when one of the youngsters, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told a parent what had been happening.

Vye was unanimously found guilty of five counts of sexual activity with a child, two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and another form of sexual assault

The verdict came at the end of a four-day trial.

Vye’s wife was also unanimously found guilty of two counts of causing or inciting child sex activity and two of cruelty.

Passing sentence at Northampton Crown Court yesterday, Judge Charles Wide QC said he had no doubt the pair had colluded in the attacks, which he described as “systematic abuse”.

He said: “I am dealing with you two for the gravest offences. “It seems that in the absence of any sexual relationship between them that she provided the children for his sexual gratification. “These offences in relation to you both were a gross breach of trust.

“The girls’ father trusted you to look after his children – you grossly abused his trust and that of the girls. These two very young girls were helpless when two adults colluded in their abuse. These little girls were coerced by you into this.

“You, Pandora Vye, may not have known exactly what your husband was doing but you knew it was something very serious.

“And serious it was, Steven Vye. One of the children was so desperate to get away from you that she hid under the bed, but you dragged her out, hurting her back as you did so.”

The couple originally pleaded guilty to the offences in 2004, but then changed their plea, making a trial necessary.
