Croydon paedophile jailed after subjecting child to a decade of horrific abuse
A vile Croydon paedophile who subjected a young girl to 10 years of abuse has been jailed for 12 years.
Sayeed Shah, 63, was found guilty on Monday (August 13) at the Old Bailey of five counts of gross indecency with a child under 14, and two of indecent assault on a child under 14.
His victim, whose identity is protected, was just four years old when the abuse started in 1982.
It continued until 1992, with the victim feeling unable to tell police until 2016.
Shah was arrested and following a week-long trial, found guilty on all seven counts.
Along with the 12-year sentence, he will spend the rest of his life on the Sex Offenders Register.
The first instance of gross indecency occurred in Shah’s bedroom, where he forced his victim to suck his nipples as though she was breastfeeding.
The court heard that this happened on more than 10 occasions over the 10-year period.
Shah would take her to places where he believed they would not be interrupted, such as his bedroom, his car or a swimming pool changing room, and sexually abuse her.
“The defendant would tell the victim to take off her shoes and socks so that they could play a game called ‘footsies’,” said prosecutor Robert Evans.
He added: “He would then tell his victim to interlock her toes with his, and this would be the start of the sexual abuse.
“He would often strip down to his pants and get his victim to rub his penis until he ejaculated.
“The victim explained that at the time of the abuse, she was too young to understand what he was doing was wrong, and that it was not until later years, when she was 14, that she finally asked him to stop.”
The court heard that Shah would take the victim out in his car and park in an alleyway and force her to perform sexual acts on him.
The jury were told he would take her to work with him, where he would pull up her top and feel her chest, something that increased in frequency as she began developing breasts.
The victim explained that Shah would buy her gifts such as sweets and clothes, something she now feels was done to keep her quiet.
Mr Evans said: “At around the age of 12, the victim’s older sister had told her mother that she believed Shah was abusing the victim, but the victim denied this as she was too embarrassed to admit what was happening.”
The woman said that as the abuse got worse Shah would ejaculate onto her, and she spoke of the smell of sweat and semen, something she says she can still recall to this day.
The victim told the court that at the age of 14 she realised what Shah was doing to her was wrong, and she said to him: “I don’t want you to touch me anymore. I want you to stop.”
It was at this time that she ran away from home to get away from the abuse, and this began an estrangement with her family for several years.
Despite denying all the charges, a jury of six men and six women found him guilty on all counts, and he was handed the prison sentence by Judge Sean Enright.
