Colchester paedophile had stash of more than 10,000 child abuse images
A convicted paedophile has avoided jail after being found with a stash of more than 10,000 images of child sexual abuse.
John Scillitoe, 48, of Bijou Close, Tiptree, built his collection over a three-year period – a horde which included the torture of children as young as six.
At Chelmsford Crown Court this afternoon (Thursday, September 13), he was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for two years.
The court heard how Scillitoe pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images, three counts of possessing indecent images and one count of possessing extreme pornography.
Police executed a warrant at Scillitoe’s home on July 22 last year, where they found the huge haul of vile images.
“They demonstrated penetration of children and children being bound,” said Claire Cooper, prosecuting.
“The children were in obvious signs of distress.
“He was interviewed on two occassions, once when he was arrested at home. His family were at home when that took place.
“He answered ‘no comment’ to all questions. After the police conducted the analysis and presented him with the evidence, he once again answered ‘no comment’.”
Scillitoe’s string offences began three years prior to the police warrant being executed.
Since the police raid, he has been open with his family who have stuck by him.
As well as the custodial sentence, Scillitoe is required to complete 40 ‘Rehabilitation Activity Requirement’ days, the Horizon programme for sex offenders and will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years.
He will also be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for ten years.
Pervert had sick haul of 10,000 indecent pictures of children
A pervert has been caught with 10,000 indecent images of children
When officers searched the home of John Scillitoe, 48, they found him to be in possession of hundreds of obscene pictures of children and an image depicting a sex act with an animal.
He viewed around 10,000 of the sick images over a period of three years, including 3,057 of the most serious category A.
Appearing at Chelmsford Crown Court yesterday, Scillitoe admitted three counts of making indecent images of children, one count of possessing an extreme pornographic image and three counts of possessing indecent photographs of children.
Members of his family watched on from the public gallery.
Between January 2014 and July 2017, when officers with Essex Police carried out their search, Scillitoe viewed 10,662 images, including 2,633 of category B and 4,972 of category C.
Hannah Sutton, representing Scillitoe, said her client had been open and honest with investigating officers from the start.
Judge Christopher Morgan agreed to delay sentencing, but warned Scillitoe, of Bijou Close, Tiptree, the case is so serious a prison sentence could well be handed down.
He said: “I will order a full pre-sentence report.
“You must understand the custody threshold has been passed in this case.
“All options will be explored in that report and the appropriate sentence will be a matter for the judge.
“You will have bail from now until then on the same terms as before.
“The sentencing will commence on September 10.”
He added: “If you fail to attend without good reason, a warrant will be issued for your arrest.
“There will be a full application for a sexual harm prevention order.”
Scillitoe will be sentenced at Chelmsford Crown Court.
