Sex offender jailed for downloading indecent images of children

A sex offender has been sent to prison for downloading indecent images and videos of children.

Robin Crowther, 52, of Melford Court, Scunthorpe, pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent photographs and videos between May and July last year.

Outlining the case at Grimsby Crown Court, prosecutor Richard Davies said there were 1,017 images and 50 videos of category A, 411 images and 13 videos of category B and 770 images and eight videos of category C.

Mr Davies said Crowther had downloaded the images onto his computer.

The prosecutor said the defendant was visited by a detective constable at his home address on July 3 2017 as part of a routine home visit as Crowther is a registered sex offender.

“During the visit, the officer had an opportunity to look at a laptop in his address. He found some indecent images,” he said.

Mr Davies said the computer was sent off for analysis.

The prosecutor told the court that these offences were committed while Crowther was awaiting sentencing for other matters.

“In interview, he said he was responsible for downloading all the indecent images,” he said.

Chris Dickens, mitigating for the defendant, said: “The defendant knows what his position is. He has previous convictions and he has done this while awaiting sentencing.

“There is the age and vulnerability of the children as some are as young as eight. There is discernible pain or distress of the children depicted.

“He has demonstrated steps to manage his offending since this.”

Mr Dickens said Crowther had taken part in a sex offenders programme for a second time.

Sentencing, Recorder Jamie Hill QC told Crowther: “This is the fifth time you have been before the courts in respect of possession of indecent images of children.”

Crowther was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
