Thomas Goddard jailed for raping schoolgirl in Irvine

A man who was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl more than 20 years ago at a house in North Ayrshire has been jailed for seven years.

Thomas Goddard, 58, was also convicted of indecently assaulting the girl and of using lewd and libidinous practices towards a 14 year-old boy.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that the offences took place at a house in Irvine between 1989 and 1991.

Judge Lord Bracadale told Goddard that he had “blighted” the girl’s childhood.

During his trial, the court was told that Goddard also indecently assaulted the girl from the age of nine to 15.

The jury heard that he showed her pornography, took naked photographs of her and plied her with alcohol and cigarettes.

In evidence, Goddard’s victim, who is now a 35-year-old woman, told advocate depute Jennifer Bain, prosecuting, that Goddard raped her four times.

She said that he would abuse her and also get the 14-year-old boy to sexually abuse her.

The woman went to the police in 2002 to tell them of what Goddard had done to her, but did not feel able to continue.

Earlier this year his other victim came forward and both, who cannot be named for legal reasons, gave evidence against Goddard.

He denied the offences against him and claimed his victims were lying.
