‘Manipulative’ pervert, 36, groomed girl and forced her to skip school for sex

A “manipulative” paedophile who showed “complete indifference” to a girl’s youth and persuaded her to skip school so he could have sex with her has been locked-up.

Jurors sitting at Hull Crown Court took five hours to convict Nicholas Smith on Thursday of two counts of sexual activity with a girl under 16 following a four-day trial.

Smith, 36, of Eastfield Road, Market Weighton, would give his victim cannabis.

Sentencing him to seven years in jail on Friday, Recorder Bryan Cox QC told Smith he had groomed his victim in 2016, knowing full well she was below the age of consent.

He said: “You were 34. It was obvious to you that she was a schoolgirl. You frequently saw her in her school uniform.

“Her youth was a matter of complete indifference to you. Your sole interest was your sexual gratification. You had sexual intercourse with her on two occasions.”

Recorder Cox QC said the matter was made more serious by the fact there was evidence of “a degree of planning, grooming and insistence” on Smith’s parrt.

“You sought to persuade her to meet up with you,” he told Smith, who sat expressionless in the dock. “You persuaded her not to go to school. You had no genuine affection for, because you were also flirting with another girl.

“You were manipulative and took steps to avoid being caught.”

Recorder Cox QC said Smith made “unpleasant threats” to a witness who threatened to expose his crimes.

“You threatened to burn her house down,” said the judge.

Smith was also made the subject of an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
