Man who molested young girl jailed despite protesting innocence
A 57-year-old man who twice molested a young schoolgirl showed “no remorse”, a court has heard.
Granddad of four Clive Garrad denied the allegations against him but was convicted after a trial by Liverpool Crown Court jury and jailed for two years.
Sentencing him, Judge Rachel Smith said he had molested the girl, then aged 11 or 12, when she visited his home and on both occasions she had smelt alcohol on his breath.
She added: “You knew she had not complained after the first incident and you rightly thought she would not do so again.
“Years passed by but your offences were not forgotten by her.” The victim eventually did tell police and Garrad, of Meadowbrook, Marton, was arrested.
“Her complaint was triggered by concerns for the safety of female children with whom you were having regular contact,” said Judge Smith.
Garrad, formerly of Kerr Close, Kirkby, Liverpool, denied the allegations and at his trial called his wife and sons to give evidence on his behalf.
