Jury decides former teacher Mark Cory did carry out 12 historic sexual assaults
A former teacher from Banstead has been found to have carried out sexual acts on seven pupils during a 13-year period.
A jury ruled against Mark Cory on three counts of indecent assault on males aged 14 and under as well as nine counts of gross indecency with a child.
Cory was found to have committed the acts, which the court heard included discussing masturbation with his students and asking a pupil to sit on his lap in front of the class.
While a jury ruled that he did carry out the offences, due to the 87-year-old’s physical condition meaning he was unfit to stand trial and give evidence, it was a trial of issue to determine whether the offences took place rather than to find him guilty.
Cory, of Cunningham Road in Banstead, has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, leading judge Jonathan Black to direct that the jury would only decide if the events happened, during a trial at Guildford Crown Court .
During a seven-day hearing from Wednesday, May 16 to Thursday, May 24, the court heard about Cory taking one of his pupils into a room where he would discuss “mutual masturbation” and if the child had “started masturbating”. The offences took place over a 13-year period.
The jury was told how Cory told one of his pupils to not tell anyone and that “it will be our little secret”.
One pupil was “subject to more sexual abuse than others”, according to the prosecution, who added that the pupil felt “embarrassed” but felt he had to perform acts Cory asked of him.
Cory took an interest in sporting activities within the school and helped build a pool within the school grounds, the court heard.
He would also supervise children in the small and main dormitories.
The jury heard how Cory would take advantage of these children “at their most vulnerable” by getting them to perform sex acts while addressing the child’s homesickness.
There was a “rule” whenever he watched over the swimming sessions, that the children had to take part naked and he would have “his penis hanging out of his shorts” as well, the court heard.
One pupil told their mother about his ordeal, and she confronted the then-head teacher about it but no action was taken, the jury was told.
Cory was found by the jury not to have carried out three further alleged offences, two of indecent assault on an under-14 and one of gross indecency with a child.
He was first charged by Surrey Police on Friday, May 19, 2017.
