Pervert caught by paedophile hunters jailed

A 57-year-old man who tried to meet a 13-year-old girl in Paignton for sex has been jailed for two years.

Builder Nicholas Briard was filmed by self-styled paedophile hunters who turned up in place of the decoy teenager.

They had snared him online by using a fake profile and Briard had enthusiastically agreed to meet her – promising her that she would enjoy sex with him and he would take her shopping for sexy underwear.

Briard was found guilty at Exeter Crown Court after he pleaded not guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.

The trial was told that Briard, a builder, had spotted the decoy’s profile on the dating site ‘Nearby’.

He then spent two-and-a-half months sending her sexually explicit messages – even though he knew all along she was just 13.

The first message he sent her read: “Hi gorgeous xx

He continued: “You look gorgeous, how could someone so sexy and with a good figure be single?”

The messages became increasingly explicit. He sent her a photo of his penis and asked that she send him naked pictures of her.

Recorder Jeremy Wright said: “Over a period of two-and-a-half months you communicated with and were attempting to groom a 13-year-old to have sex with you by flattery and the promise of gifts. You sent extremely explicit texts.”

The messages included questions like ‘Are you looking forward to sleeping with me?’ When the ‘girl’ replied that she was slightly scared he told her he would be gentle and she would enjoy it.

“You will be fine, babe,” he wrote. “When we go shopping to buy you some nice things and sexy black underwear for when you go to bed – that turns me on.”

He added: “I can’t wait to sleep with you and have sex with you for the first time.”

When problems arose about the pair meeting, Briard got angry and sent the decoy messages about her ‘messing him about’.

Briard admitted possessing 11g of amphetamine when he was arrested.

Judge Wright sent Briard to jail and made him the subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to limit his contact with girls.
