Remorseless paedophile groomed and abused ‘naive’ girl to satisfy ‘sexual lust’
A remorseless paedophile from Hull groomed and abused an underage girl, showing “complete indifference” to her feelings.
David Proffitt, 40, went to prison on Wednesday still denying his sex crimes against the vulnerable girl he molested several years ago.
He asked her to have sex with him, went on to do so repeatedly, and asked her to send him images, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, the Recorder of Middlesbrough, told Proffitt: “You planned these offences against this young girl.
“You did it out of sexual lust for her.
“She was, I’m quite satisfied, at the time naive and younger than her age.
“You planned this. You groomed her and you had your way with her. You had sex with her on a number of occasions.
“You took advantage of her naivety and vulnerability. There was planning. There was grooming.
“There are a number of aggravating features, first and foremost your complete indifference to her feelings.”
The judge had seen both the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and Proffitt give evidence in a trial last month.
Proffitt put her through that ordeal as he denied all of the offences, which he committed when he lived in Hartlepool.
Judge Bourne-Arton recalled how he asked Proffitt in the witness box about his feelings for the girl.
Proffitt replied: “I have no feelings towards her whatsoever.”
He was convicted by the jury on four charges of sexual activity with a child, one of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and one of making indecent photographs of a child.
He still maintains his innocence.
The judge told the defiant sex offender: “You have no feelings towards her whatsoever.
“You have no feelings towards what you have done.
“You were completely indifferent to her. Your only thought and motivation was for yourself.
“You denied to the probation officer any interest in sexual activity with children.
“That is a lie. You have considerable interest in young girls.
“It’s aggravated also by the images that you caused her to send to you.”
Prosecutor Paul Cleasby said: “It’s clearly grooming behaviour.”
He told how the young victim hated Proffitt for what he did and now realised the things he said to her were lies.
She said in a statement she found the court case extremely stressful.
Proffitt could have brought it to an end at any time by admitting what he had done, she added.
Proffitt, of Valiant Drive, Hull, was jailed for eight years and given a sexual harm prevention order and will be on the sex offenders’ register, both indefinitely.
