Builder told schoolgirl ‘something bad’ would happen if she told anyone they had sex
A builder with a wife and four children in Romania has been jailed for having sex with an underage girl in Swansea.
Swansea Crown Court heard the jailing of Marius Ciprian Radu will have a big impact on his family, who rely on the money he sends home every week.
Radu was 36 at the time of the incident – his victim was aged 14.
Helen Powell, prosecuting, said the sexual activity took place in a house in the the city in December 2016.
She said Radu had told the girl that “something bad” would happen if she told anyone about the incident.
The prosecutor said the victim’s parents noticed a change in her behaviour following the incident, and asked her what was wrong – she later told them about Radu.
Miss Powell told the court that an examination of Radu’s mobile phone showed he visited websites which suggested he had an interest in young girls.
In an impact statement from the girl’s mum, she said her daughter had become “withdrawn” since the incident, spending more time at home on her own and less out with friends.
Radu, aged 37, of Mumbles Road, Mumbles, Swansea, had previously pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child when he appeared in the dock for sentencing.
Judge Peter Heywood told Radu it must have been clear to him that the girl was underage.
He said: “You are living in the UK, and it is UK law that applies not Romanian law.”
Giving Radu a 20%t credit for his guilty plea, the judge sentenced him to four years in prison – half that sentence will be served in custody before the defendant is released on licence.
Radu will also be a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.
