Shrewsbury man snared by paedophile hunters avoids jail
A 41-year-old Shrewsbury man who was caught out in a paedophile hunter sting has avoided a jail sentence.
Matthew Davenport, of Churchill Road, engaged in sexual communication, with someone he believed was a 13-year-old girl, between September and December 2017.
He was snared by a paedophile hunter group who set up a fake online profile pretending to be a young girl.
At Shrewsbury Crown Court on Monday, Davenport was given a three-year community order.
Sati Ruck, prosecuting, said: “The group was contacted by the defendant and he was informed that the person he was speaking to was a 13-year-old girl. He was 40 at the time but his profile said he was 18.
“The defendant very quickly moved the conversation to a sexual nature.”
In October Davenport sent a message asking if the girl would like to meet up. He said he would take her shopping and pay for her to have her hair and nails done, however no arrangements were actually made.
He also sent her a sexual image of himself.
On December 27 Davenport was arrested and admitted signing up to the website because he was lonely.
Judge Anthony Lowe said Davenport needed to address his issues in order for it to not happen again in the future
He said the defendant would benefit more from a community order than a custodial sentence.
“You have undoubtedly had difficulties to cope with in your life,” he added. “But just because you have those difficulties doesn’t explain why you are effectively sexually attracted to children. Whatever is going on in your head needs to be addressed.
“I hope this will be the one and only time you appear in court and I hope it will be a wake up call.”
Davenport was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, was made the subject of a sexual harm prevention order and must sign the sex offenders register.
