‘Adults can be friends with kids’ Vile sex beast finally jailed for 90s abuse

A sick paedophile from Torquay abused young girls after plying them with drugs and alcohol.

Twisted Wyatt Somerville, aged 76, gave the children cannabis and showed the youngsters pornography, a court heard.

He performed vile sex acts at his home sometimes with as many as three girls in the room at the time.

Somerville indecently touched some of the girls repeatedly on dozens of occasions over the years and performed sex acts upon himself

He also got girls to dance naked in front of him for his perverted pleasure.

The youngest victim was aged only six, Plymouth Crown Court heard.

Somerville, now living in the seaside resort, must have thought he got away with his perverted behaviour with five girls – having escaped justice for almost 20 years.

Jailing him for 11 years for 19 offences, Recorder Jonathan Barnes said: “This has had a devastating effect on all five complainants. It will I am sure continue to haunt them for the rest of their lives.

“I only hope that today brings them some degree of closure.”

Several victims watched from behind a screen over the videolink from the North West, the offences having happened in Manchester and nearby Rochdale in the 1990s.

Turning to them after Somerville had been taken away, the judge told the trio: “I know you will feel the sentence is not nearly enough, but I am constrained by the sentencing guidelines.”

He said that Somerville, also known as Lloyd Jamieson, would serve five and a half years – but because of his age may never be released.

Retired Somerville, of Rawlyn Road, Torquay, pleaded guilty to one charge of attempted rape, 17 offences of indecent assault and one of indecency with a child between 1993 and 2000.

One of the victims had earlier told the court in a statement: “I still have flashbacks. He should suffer as I will suffer, for the rest of my life.”

The court heard Somerville was convicted of indecent assault and jailed for six months in 1983, though details of the offence had been lost.

Somerville will remain on the sex offender register for the rest of his life.
