NHS pervert snared after undercover police officer posed as 14-year-old girl in sex chats
AN NHS worker who thought he was having online sex chats with a 14-year-old girl was snared by an undercover police officer posing as a teenager.
Richard Watt, who was employed as an Aneurin Bevan University Health Board facilities supervisor, also admitted to looking at “disgusting” indecent photographs of children.
Cardiff Crown Court heard how the 48-year-old, of Maindee Road, Cwmfelinfach, between Risca and Blackwood, was caught in the police sting after they used a decoy.
Prosecutor John Lloyd said Watt thought he had made contact on the internet with a 14-year-old schoolgirl.
He added: “The defendant asked her if she was a virgin. He asked her to be careful in case her mother was around.”
What Watt didn’t know, Mr Lloyd said, was that he was actually chatting to “an undercover officer who had created a fictitious persona”.
When police went to arrest Watt at his home last month, they also found five indecent stills of children on his Samsung tablet, the court heard.
Watt pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and also admitted two counts of making an indecent image of a child.
Recorder Greg Bull QC told the defendant he had carried on “lewd and obscene” conversations.
“I have to protect young girls from the likes of you and people of a like mind,” he said.
The judge added that the pictures Watt had looked at were “disturbing and disgusting”.
The judge then went on to say that he believed Watt would be better served by a non-custodial term.
He said this was because “a relatively short period in prison will mean you will receive no help or counselling”.
The defendant was sentenced to a three-year community order and to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work.
He must also pay prosecution costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £140, which must be settled within three months.
Watt will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years and a sexual harm prevention order was made for the same length of time.
