Disgraced primary school head teacher jailed over images of girl

A teenage girl’s dreams of going to a top university “have been shattered” as a result of the sexual exploitation she suffered from a primary school head teacher, her mother has told a court.

Addressing Durham Crown Court, the woman told how her daughter has lost trust in teachers and has suffered mood swings after exchanging intimate images of herself with John Stubbins.

The court heard how 44-year-old Stubbins, who was a head teacher at a County Durham primary school at the time of the offending, developed a “self-destructive infatuation” with the girl, who was then aged 16.

The defendant, a father of two, had previously admitted to two counts of sexual exploitation, one of possessing an indecent image of category B, and another of possessing 16 category C indecent images of the teenager.

Jailing Stubbins for two years and two months and ordering him to register as a sex offender for the next 10 years, Judge Jonathan Carroll said: “Young people are the future of the nation.

“Society depends on teachers and society needs the best of us to come forward as teachers at our schools.

“It is a privilege to hold that trust, and you abused it in a way that would truly offend and shock any right-thinking person.”

The judge added that the defendant would have been aware that the offences, which occurred between February and March 2017, were potentially “career ending”.

The mother of the girl, who was not a pupil at the school that Stubbins taught at, said her daughter had been an A-grade student prior to getting involved with him, but had seen her performance at school suffer as a result of stress.

She told the court the teenager had been “very private, very naive and very studious” prior to meeting the then-head teacher, describing her as a “very young 16-year-old”.

Prosecutor Shaun Dodds told how the defendant, of St Cuthbert’s Road, Gateshead, had exchanged thousands of messages with the girl.

The court heard how, following his arrest in March 2017, Stubbins was suspended from the school he was working at.

Shame of Durham headteacher over pictures of girl

A headteacher is facing a prison sentence after admitting two charges of inciting a child to be involved in indecent images

John Stubbins pleaded guilty to the two offences which happened on February 22 and 25 last year in the Durham area when he appeared in court yesterday.

The 44-year-old also admitted a further charge of possession of 16 category C indecent images but did not enter a plea on a further charge of possession of a more serious category B image.

County Durham and Darlington Magistrates’ Court was told the defendant was a headteacher in a County Durham school

The father-of-two, who appeared in court wearing a blue coat, was supported by members of his family throughout the short hearing while the victim’s family were sitting at the opposite side of the small courtroom.

John Garside, prosecuting, said: “This is an abuse of position and trust. At the time of the offences the victim was 16-years-old and the defendant was 43-years-old and working as a headteacher at a primary school.

“As this was a clear abuse of position and trust, the crown would say that sentencing falls outside this court’s sentencing power.”

Stubbins, of St Cuthberts Road, Gateshead, was in possession of the 16 category C images between February 16 and March 24 last year.

Stubbins was released on conditional bail that bars him from having unsupervised contact with anyone under the age of 16 and from contacting the victim or her family.

He will next appear at Durham Crown Court on Monday, May 5 for sentence.
