Three years for brute
A man who brutalised women and children in a series of attacks has been jailed for three years at the High Court in Edinburgh.
Edward Callanan, 52, assaulted victims at addresses in Glasgow over a 12-year period.
A woman was kicked while she was holding a seven-month-old boy causing her to drop the child and a pregnant victim was punched. Two were subjected to indecent assaults.
Callanan, of Balbeggie Street, Glasgow, was also placed on the sex offenders’ register.
Edward Callanan guilty of abusing former partners and children
A man is facing a jail term after being convicted of assault and indecency and against women and children.
Edward Callanan carried out the abuse at properties in Glasgow’s east end and south side between 1986 and 1998.
The High Court in Glasgow heard he attacked one woman while she was pregnant and subjected two young girls to “excessive punishment”.
Sentence on the 52-year-old was deferred. Judge Lord Jones also placed him on the sex offenders register.
The jury heard how Callanan started by repeatedly slapping his first victim before he met another woman and the violence soon began with her.
The woman – now 49 – told how he was initially a “Jack the Lad” and “Happy as Larry”.
She eventually moved into his house in the city’s east-end and the woman told how it was there he flew into a rage as she was preparing dinner.
Recalling him hurling a plate at her, she said: “He claimed he did not like his curry mixed up with his rice.”
The jury heard how Callanan also punched her in the stomach while she was pregnant.
Callanan’s attacks on a third victim, the court heard, happened so often that she “got used to them over time”.
He also subjected two young girls to “excessive punishment”. This included locking them in a room if they made too much noise or lashing out with a belt.
Callanan, of the city’s Mount Vernon area, had also been accused of raping one of the women and one of the girls, but the jury returned not proven verdicts.
