Swindon army veteran Peter Jarvis ‘contributed’ to the rape of girl, 8
A former soldier who was found with thousands of indecent images of children on his computer has been told he ‘contributed to the rape of an eight-year-old child’.
Peter Jarvis, who served in Northern Ireland and the Falklands, had a 35 minute movie of the little girl being abused among his collection of vile material.
Judge Robert Pawson told him that people like him created a market for the rape of children across the world by accessing it online.
But after hearing the 56-year-old had already sought help for his problem the judge sitting at Swindon Crown Court imposed a suspended sentence.
Hannah Squire, prosecuting, said police monitoring file sharing websites identified Jarvis’ computer as downloading the files.
When police went to his house in May last year he told them he knew why they were there and handed over his hardware for analysis.
Miss Squire said officers found more than 2,000 pictures and movies of child abuse, cartoons of children and images of bestiality involving adults.
She said he had 40 movies in the worst category, some of which were short but one lasting for 35 minutes, and almost all showing girls aged from eight to 14.
While some of the images had been deleted and were only on the hard drive others were saved on the machine and available to view.
And it was also found that terms often used for hunting the material had been put into search engines.
Jarvis, of Winton Road, Stratton, admitted three counts of making indecent images of children, possessing prohibited images of children and having extreme pornography.
Passing sentence the judge outlined the contents of the longest movie during which the young girl was repeatedly raped.
He said “In case it is not obvious Mr Jarvis, somewhere on the planet there is a child, or maybe a young woman, to whom that was done.
“She was an eight-year-old child. She was raped. The reason people take pictures of that is because people like you have created a demand for it.
“People like you have amongst other things, contributed to the rape of an eight-year-old child. You should hang your head in shame.”
He imposed a 16 month jail term suspended for two years with 200 hours of unpaid work and 40 days of rehabilitation activity requirement.
Child abuse images admitted by man
MAGISTRATES have committed Peter Jarvis to Swindon Crown Court for sentencing after he pleaded guilty to charges of making and possessing images and films of child abuse and extreme pornography.
The 56-year-old made 12 photographs and 40 moving images judged to be in the worst category.
He also admitted making more than 1,900 images and possession of 19 prohibited movies of children in category C, with 12 in category B and two extreme pornographic movies featuring bestiality.
The five offences all happened between 2010 and May last year. Jarvis, of Winton Road, was ordered to register immediately with the police at Gablecross station as a sex offender and was granted bail until February 16 on condition that he has no unsupervised contact with a child under 16.
