Retired teacher from Frome admits possessing and downloading hundreds of indecent images and videos of children

A retired teacher from Frome has appeared in court after admitting possessing and downloading pornographic images of children.

Timothy John Tur was still tutoring children during the time he committed the offences over a three year period.

When he appeared in the dock before Somerset Magistrates, sitting at Yeovil, they were told that the charges involved several hundred indecent photographs and videos.

Tur, 67, of Spring Gardens, pleaded guilty that between March 5, 2014 and April 12, 2017 at Axbridge he made indecent photographs of children, namely 24 moving images and 34 still images in the most serious Category A.

He also admitted a further charge between the same dates of making indecent images of children, namely six moving images and 25 still images in Category B.

He also admitted a similar offence of making three moving images and 151 still images in Category C.

The defendant also pleaded guilty to a further allegation that on April 11 this year at Axbridge he was in possession of prohibited images of children.

Prosecutor Christine Hart told the court that the defendant was found by police to be in possession of a number of indecent photographs and videos, some which were in the highest bracket of seriousness.

“The aggravating feature of this case also is that Tur is a retired teacher and he was still tutoring pupils while these offences were being committed, although not in a professional capacity,” she said.

After consideration the magistrates said the offences were so serious that the defendant must be sent to Taunton Crown Court to be sentenced.

They adjourned the case until January 12 when Tur must appear before a judge, and they also ordered a pre sentence report to be prepared by the Probation Service.

The defendant’s conviction triggered an automatic inclusion on the national Sex Offenders Register.

He was ordered to sign the register within three days of the court hearing which makes him liable to comply with a number of requirements.

He was warned that if he didn’t comply with those requirements then he could face being sent to prison.

Until his next court appearance at Taunton Tur was released on unconditional bail.
