Rapist who ‘paid’ young girl 5p for sex is jailed

A child rapist has been jailed decades after ‘paying’ a young girl 5p for sex.

David Armstrong, 58, groomed the primary school aged victim when he was a teenager and progressed from touching her to rape.

Armstrong, who was himself a teenager at the time of the offences, was jailed for nine years and four months at Liverpool Crown Court today after admitting one count of rape and six of indecent assault.

The court heard three of the indecent assault charges involved oral sex and would be classified as rape if the offences had been committed under modern legislation.

Armstrong, of Belmont Drive, Tuebrook, pleaded guilty on the basis he was under 18 at the time, which was accepted by prosecutors.

Graham Pickavance, prosecuting, told the court the abuse left the victim with lasting psychological problems and she battles with suicidal thoughts.

A victim personal statement from the now adult woman, read in court, said: “When it was happening I didn’t realise what David was doing was wrong, it was as if it was normal.

“But looking back I must have known deep down because if it was normal why didn’t I say anything to anyone?”

The court heard how Armstrong cunningly offered the victim 5p on one occasion, which she described as one of the worst elements of the abuse.

The woman described how she struggled with thoughts of suicide at times due to the haunting memories of the abuse and feelings of guilt – until finally gaining the courage to speak to police.

The court heard Armstrong admitted the offences in full and had not committed any similar offences since the abuse ended, in the 1970s.

John Weate, defending, said his client had made it clear he did not wish to dispute anything in the victim’s account of the abuse.

Mr Weate said: “He describes his not coming forward more quickly and dealing with this as cowardly and he accepts that his behaviour was abhorrent over a number of years. Can he explain it? No he can’t,”

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones, sentencing, said: “It has resulted in terrible trauma, as she described she has sustained and experienced a a real sense of diminished self worth and she feels a real sense of guilt as far as the offences are concerned, as is so often the case with victims of sexual abuse when in reality nothing could be further from the truth.”

Man who raped young girl four decades ago told he faces jail in the new year

A man who admitted raping a young girl four decades ago has been told he faces jail in the new year.

David Armstrong, 57, raped and molested the primary school pupil over a number of years in the 1970s.

The pervert hung his head in the dock at Liverpool Crown Court during a short hearing this morning.

He admitted one count of rape and six counts of indecent assault – three of which were oral sex and would today be classified as rape.

Armstrong, of Belmont Drive, Tuebrook, pleaded guilty on the basis he was under 18 at the time, which was accepted by prosecutors.

Offenders must be punished under the law at the time the crimes were committed and receive a sentence based on their age at that point.

Judge Robert Trevor-Jones remanded Armstrong on conditional bail until January 15 next year and ordered him to sign on the Sex Offenders Register.
