Wishaw man avoids prison despite being caught with 2,500 indecent images of kids
A Wishaw man caught with indecent images of children has avoided a jail stretch after a sheriff ruled a community-based sentence would protect the public better.
James Russell, 50, of Greenfield Crescent, Wishaw, was handed a three-year community payback order and will be on the sex offenders’ register for the same length of time.
The widower appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court where he admitted possession of the images following a police raid at his home in January this year.
Sheriff Marie Smart told Russell, a first offender: “Clearly this is a serious offence, but the protection of the public, and children in particular, will be better served by a stringent CPO over a long period than a custodial sentence which would not address your underlying problems.”
Russell was caught with more than 2,500 indecent images of children on his computer by police.
