Child rapist sentence to 24 years

A child rapist who sexually assaulted four very young girls over a seven-year period has been jailed for more than 20 years.

James Barrett, 65, of Louvain Road, Greenhithe, Kent was found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court of:

  • Five counts of assault by penetration of a child under 13 years

  • Three counts of sexual assault of a child under 13

  • Two counts of rape

  • Four counts of sexual activity with a child

  • Four counts of causing a child to watch a sexual act

  • One count of raping a child under 13 years.

The abuse on the children was committed between 2008 and 2016, while the children were aged between 8 and 15-years-old.

The offences took place at Barrett’s home address and at an address in Bexley. He was known to the victims.

The victims first contacted police on Monday, 29 May, and Barrett was arrested and charged the following day.

He was found guilty on 10 November after a five day trial.
