Paedophile with ‘lecherous expression’ on his face gropes young girl at Royal Derby Hospital
A paedophile who groped a young girl in the Royal Derby Hospital has been jailed due to the “lecherous expression” on his face when he committed the shocking act.
Hospital visitor John Gregory, 75, was seen in a corridor of the hospital touching the chest of the underage girl, who was described as “vulnerable” and “slow”.
Judge Peter Cooke said CCTV footage showed Gregory touching the girl on February 25 this year and it was the look on his face which swayed him to make the prison sentence immediate, rather than suspended.
At Derby Crown Court, Judge Cooke said: “You reached the age of 75 retaining your good character but you have now lost it in the most spectacular circumstances.
“This offence is undoubtedly aggravated by the location and timing. It was in a hospital corridor in front of staff who were shocked to the core by what happened.
“There’s shocking CCTV footage of your brazen nature. You didn’t even attempt to disguise what you were doing and how you maintain continued denial remains a mystery to me.
“After watching the video, the lecherous expression on your face is what swayed me to make the prison sentence immediate.
“It is clear you are quite a worrying gentleman and you must face the reality of what you have done.”
Gregory, of Spencer Road, Belper, originally denied one count of sexual assault and later changed his plea to guilty on 24 October.
Luke Blackburn, prosecuting, said Gregory was visiting a patient in hospital when the incident happened. He said he “isolated” his victim and staff originally thought he was playing with the girl but later realised he was “caressing” her.
He said: “He was seen by a staff member who noticed a couple who appeared to be very playful. On closer inspection he became aware the man was significantly older than the girl and his hands were on her breasts.
Gregory was also made subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order.
