THE wife of a child rapist has been sent to prison for her role in the historic sexual abuse case.
Caroline Connolly was found guilty of child neglect as she had an “active role” in her husband James raping a young girl known to them.
The rapes happened between 1968 and 1980, with one at an address near Midhurst and another in Hampshire.
The girl was aged between nine and 16 when she was raped.
Connolly, 70, of Berinswell in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, was given 18 months for child neglect last Friday.
Her husband pleaded guilty to the two counts in April last year, and was accused of another three counts of rape against the girl when she was aged between four and nine. He pleaded not guilty to them, but died in October before he could stand trial.
Caroline Connolly failed to protect the defenseless girl from these rapes although aware that they were taking place, despite the child having told her three times, and yet she did nothing.
Connolly was also present when her husband beat the child with a belt buckle, causing marks on her legs so that she could not go to school, punched her in the face and knocked her unconscious.
There were also two incidents in which the girl was put into the same bed as the couple and was sexually abused by James Connolly himself, about which Caroline Connolly did nothing.
