Paedophile tried to buy his victims’ silence for 50p

A remorseless paedophile was branded a “rat” by his now adult victim as he was jailed for abusing her and her son

David Fitzgibbon left the woman so traumatised she turned to heroin and alcohol aged only 13 – and was later faced with the horror of realising her own son had fallen prey to the pervert.

The 54-year-old, of Parkvale Road in Walton , was jailed for six years and eight months at Liverpool Crown Court today after admitting nine counts of indecent assault on a child.

David Polglase, prosecuting, told the court Fitzgibbon gave his victims coins and told them “it was our little secret” after groping them and forcing them to touch his penis.

He told the court the abuse started when Fitzgibbon called the victim into his room and began “kissing her to the mouth using his tongue” before putting his hand down her dress.

He said: “She was then given 50p and told this was our little secret.

“She said she felt sick due to his breath; he would breath heavily during these offences, and there was always money.”

Mr Polglase read a victim impact statement from the woman, which detailed the devastating effects of Fitzgibbon’s sick abuse on her life.

She said: “At the age of 13, still traumatised by what I had gone through, I turned to drink. I would drink every day and also tried Class A drugs.

“I tried heroin at 13, I didn’t know how to deal with everything so I would get intoxicated to block it out.”

The woman also said later in life her struggles with drugs landed her in prison.

She said: “Hopefully when the court case finishes I will somehow be able to rebuild my life.”

The court heard Fitzgibbon later targeted the woman’s son.

Mr Polglase said he would touch the boy’s penis and told him: “You’re my mate aren’t you? This is our little secret.”

A statement from the second victim described how he felt “ashamed” and “embarrassed” by the abuse.

He said: “The horrible traumatic things that David Fitzgibbon did to me will remain with me forever. He took something away from me before I was old enough to know better.

“I hope that by sending him to prison I will finally start to get some form of closure and satisfaction. The scars will always remain with me. He took my childhood away from me and the chance to feel like a normal man.”

The court heard the victims’ painful secrets came to light earlier this year when the now grown man revealed to his mother what happened.

The pair went to police in February and Fitzgibbon, who worked as a council litter picker for 24 years, was later arrested.

Fitzgibbon was ordered to sign the sex offenders’ register for life and handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, restricting his movements.

He was also made the subject of an indefinite restraining order banning him from ever contacting the victims again.

As he was led to the cells, the sobbing victim shouted: “I hope you rot you f***** rat.”
