Former army soldier groped 13-year-old and asked her to wear sexy nighty
A former army soldier who asked a 13-year-old girl to wear a negligee and groped her has been jailed.
William Murray, of Hawthorn Road in St Neots, also masturbated in front of the girl and said ‘this is what guys like’, a court has heard.
Murray was found guilty of one charge of indecent assault after a trial at Cambridge Crown Court this week.
The 59-year-old was sentenced at the same court on Friday (November 3), where he was handed three years in prison.
During his trial this week, jurors heard that the indecent assault took place in Cambridgeshire in the 1980s when he was aged 31 and his victim was just 13 years old.
Murray pushed the young girl into a bedroom before shutting the door, the court was told.
He asked the young girl to wear a negligee before chucking it at her, but she declined and told him that asking her to do that was “disgusting”.
Giving evidence, the young girl said when she tried to escape and made her way towards the door, Murray touched her inappropriately “for a couple of minutes”.
Jurors also heard that Murray then took his trousers down before masturbating in front of the teenager, saying ‘this is what guys like’ and asking her to put her hand on his penis.
The young girl eventually ran out of the room crying, the court was told, and the offence was not told to police until recently.
Sentencing, Recorder Peter Guest said Murray’s abuse of a young girl was “sustained and more than just a momentary action”.
He told Murray: “There was additional humiliation in your contact with this young girl in which you performed a sex act in front of her.
“There was a significant age gap between you and your victim at the time of this offence and she was particularly vulnerable given her young age.
“You also took steps to prevent the young girl from reporting this matter, telling her ‘don’t say anything to anybody’.
“Given all the circumstances, only an immediate custodial sentence is appropriate in this case.”
