Croydon sex offender walks free from court after telling 10-year-old girl ‘you look sexy’
A Croydon man has walked free from court after he was convicted of grabbing a 10-year-old girl and telling the terrified child she looked “sexy”.
Daniel Pottorill appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court this afternoon (Thursday, October 19) where it was heard that the 42-year-old clutched the arm of the “scared” little girl and said to her “you are looking sexy”.
Pottorill was convicted following a trial on September 22 and today the court heard the victim was so young she didn’t know what the word sexy meant.
During the sentencing hearing, Pottorill’s actions were brandished “intolerable” as he was handed a suspended 26-week prison sentence for one count of assault on a girl under the age of 13, where the touching was sexual.
The court was told the girl had been walking with her mum along Windmill Road on July 27 when she was grabbed by Pottorill.
Prosecutor Alex Slater told the court the girl had seen Pottorill several times in Croydon before the incident happened and recognised his face.
He said: “She first saw him coming into a chicken shop where he was seen mumbling, she didn’t understand what he was saying.
“As time went on she saw him more times in various places.
“On July 27 [the girl] was with her mum on Windmill Road and told her mum it was a man she kept seeing everywhere she goes.
“He walked over and took hold of her arm above the elbow.
“He told her ‘you’re looking sexy’.
“When [the girl’s] mum turned around and asked the defendant whether he meant her or her daughter, he replied ‘your daughter’.
“Then he walked away into the park.
“She doesn’t know what the word sexy means, but the defendant doing what she did made her feel scared because he touched her.”
When sentencing Pottorill, Eric Nash labelled the crime “intolerable”.
He added: “This 10-year-old girl should not be grabbed in the way that you grabbed this young lady. You have not understood the seriousness of your crimes.”
The 26-week prison sentence will be suspended for 18 months, and he will now have to sign onto the Sex Offenders Register.
