Blurton man caught with indecent child images after taking phone in for repair
A Stoke-on-Trent man was caught with more than 70 indecent images of children when he took his mobile phone to be repaired, a court heard.
Jack Hislop, 19, of Ballinson Road, Blurton, was found out after an engineer fixing his phone uncovered a number of pictures and alerted the police.
Hislop was handed a 12-month suspended jail term after pleading guilty to three charges of indecent images at North Staffordshire Magistrates Court.
He was caught out after taking his LG phone to be repaired at local electric store, CEX, in January this year.
When the images were discovered, police raided his home and found 54 category A images, four category B and 13 category C on two mobile phones.
Laura Nash, prosecuting at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, said: “He tried to say that he had looked at the images as research for his university course as he studies forensic computing.
“He has since dropped out of the course as a result of these offences.”
Phillip Gibbs, representing Hislop, said: “He acknowledges the damage that this imagery does to the victims.
“There have been some significant consequences already and he has left his family home.
“He has managed to find a job with the employment of 40 hours a week.”
Honour Judge JS Boora, sentencing Hislop at court today (October 13), said: “It is obscene what you were looking at and what you were downloading.
“There must be some indication on your criminal record of how serious these offences are.
“The excuse that it was for university research is nonsense.
“I have taken into account that you pleased guilty at the first opportunity.”
Hislop was handed a 12-month suspended sentence and was given a sexual harm prevention order.
He must complete 200 hours of unpaid work and pay £340 costs, and will be placed on the Sex Offender Register.
